Once upon a time, a there was a man who commanded fire as well as he commanded his troops. He had a wife, and a son that he was proud of.

Then he laid siege on the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se for 600 days.

The reason he stopped on the 600th day was because his son died in that battle.

When Iroh's wife went away to live in the woman's wing, he did not stop her.

Now retired, Iroh cares for his nephew, Prince Zuko, as if he is his own son. For Zuko's whole life, he's been trying compensate for the damage Ozai has wrought. Iroh taught the boy firebending, but he also taught him to laugh, to love music, but most of all, he taught him to love his people and value life. For this, Iroh blames himself for the event that cost Zuko his eye, for it was his teachings, and his nephew's own honor and wisdom, that prompted the boy to speak out in his father's war room, against the unnecessary sacrifice of Fire Nation troops.

Iroh watched his nephew's skin burn with his brother Ozai's touch at the Agni Ka. He was with him when he cried in pain as they cleaned and dressed the wounds, he was the one that went to Lord Ozai and reasoned him into not having Zuko executed, and he went with Zuko even in exile.

Iroh knows his nephew is growing into a man of honor, and that he is the best hope for the Fire Nation--and perhaps the world. As such, he tries his best to guide his nephew down the right path to becoming a true leader--wise, honorable, and benevolent--and acts as a calm buoy in Zuko's relentless sea of wangst.

However, this business is all entirely too serious to dwell on right now. How about some nice ginseng tea?

Iroh is an aging man with grey hair in a topknot and a grey beard. His demeanor alternates between serious and playful, and he always seems to know what it is best to be at what time.

Very laid-back, clever, wise, and detesting war in his old age, Iroh would much prefer to sit and drink tea and play Pai Sho, but despite his age, underneath the silly, old man lies a dragon. He is a very powerful firebender and a war-tempered warrior. It is fortunate for all that the dragon sleeps now, although for Zuko, Iroh will do anything.
